In painting Shakespeare’s sonnets, I rely heavily on paintings by some of the greatest artists in the history of humankind – sometimes referencing them directly, visibly, in my “sonnet paintings”, sometimes indirectly, so that the links may not be obvious to the viewer’s eye.
On this website, I want to build a gallery of all these “source paintings”, tracing back every single influence, every single idea that has been inspired (or influenced) by another artist. This is a fundamental part of examining the process and experience of Art.
Actually, I envision not a single gallery, but rather several thematically coherent galleries – along the lines suggested by Alain de Bottom and John Armstrong in their recent book, “Art as Therapy” – so that you could choose a gallery that would fit your current mood and inner need.
As everything here, this part of the website will grow gradually, organically as it were, as I will be writing down and editing my notes on each “source painting”.
